Water

Water is amazing, it is everywhere and its good for you! What can you do with water?

First and foremost drinking water keeps your child hydrated and this will help them to feel better. If they hold their wee and or struggle with bathroom issues it can even help to keep away infections (just a good idea to keep them hydrated!)

Second, watching water pore from one cup to anther can be very calming. Have the child play with some bowls and cups to just pore water from one container to the other. This helps to relax them and can be a great sensory exercise. You can also add food colour to the water to watch how colours mix.

Third, a bath! You don’t just need to use a bath for cleaning, you can use a bath for play and for fun. Fill a bath simply to play in. They could wear a swimsuit and bring in toys they normally don’t. Allow them to just splash and have fun. This is a great use of play and also fills sensory needs. It can also be calming.

Fourth, the sounds of water (waves, rain…etc). Sometimes when our children are over stimulated, a calming sound can help them to calm down. The sound of water can be very calming and is one of the things I use when I need to relax, the sounds of water can help your child relax as well.

Water has so many uses, I am sure you can find even more! Think about water and how many things you can do with it. You don’t even need to be home as you can find it everywhere, and it is very easy to clean up.
