Therapeutic Tool

A piece of paper.
What can you do with a piece of paper?

You can colour on it, draw a face with the emotions your child is feeling. Name the feeling and see if your child can connect with it, maybe even draw their own. Great use of learning emotions.

You can fold it and fly aeroplanes! See how far they can fly. Can you get it to fly high? far? Can you get the wind to catch it? This is a great time to play and build connection.

You can crunch it into a ball and throw it! crunch it up as tight as you can, this uses their muscles and can be a de-stressor. Then throw it. Throw it far, high or at a target! Use all that energy that is directed at anger and direct at throwing the ball of paper instead.

You can also tear it up. This is a great tool to help a child regulate their emotions. The feel of the paper and the sound helps many children to calm down. It can also help to re-direct a child who tears up other items.

Give your child a box of paper to tear up, throw, and just create with. Don’t have any rules attached, know that the paper in that box is going to be ruined, torn and smashed and that is ok. It is an easy and recyclable tool to help your child have some fun and to help them regulation their emotions.
